Holistic Education – Connecting Knowledge and Emotions at PennSchool
Nội dung bài viết
Our curriculum thoughtfully integrates Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to provide a foundation of psychological safety, fostering emotional self-management skills, while nurturing character and promoting the holistic development of every student.
According to UNESCO, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students develop the skills to recognize and manage emotions, show empathy, build healthy relationships, and make responsible, ethical decisions. SEL integrates cognitive, social, emotional, and academic components to enhance mental well-being, support academic success, empower students to become confident global citizens, and drive positive social change.
At PennSchool, SEL is seamlessly integrated into every learning and daily activity through five key orientations:
Recognizing one’s emotions
From their early school years, students are guided to identify and name their emotions. This helps them better understand themselves and develop independence – a vital factor for effective learning and a happy life.
Caring for emotions and nurturing gratitude
PennSchool incorporates emotional education activities such as psychology workshops and community projects to foster compassion and a positive outlook in every student.
Connecting with the community and learning from relationships
PennSchool builds a friendly learning environment where #HomeOfTheEagles can play, communicate, and collaborate. Group activities, interdisciplinary projects, and school events provide opportunities for students to learn teamwork, resolve conflicts respectfully, and form positive relationships.
Staying focused and proactive in learning
SEL helps students build the ability to concentrate – an essential skill for effective knowledge acquisition and lifelong learning.
Building self-confidence
Through social-emotional development, students gradually develop confidence, decision-making skills, and healthy habits – key elements that help them succeed in academics, careers, and life.
At PennSchool, SEL is not treated as a separate subject – it is a philosophy woven into every aspect of school life. From the classroom and playground to the relationships within the PennSchool community, every experience contributes to nurturing a generation of students who grow in both knowledge and heart.
