[PENN Educators’ Voices] Empowering Students to Begin Their Journey and Define Their Own Horizon

Nội dung bài viết

The first edition of PENN Educators’ Voices – a series where we listen to meaningful perspectives from PennSchool’s educators – features a conversation with Mr. Timothy Nelson, Principal of the International Program & Academic Director.

Starting with the question of how students are empowered in their learning, Mr. Timothy Nelson also leads us to a question many students have asked themselves: If I do not know where I want to go yet, am I falling behind others?

Empowering students to contribute in their own way

“At PennSchool, student empowerment is not something that happens in a single moment or through a single activity. It is nurtured throughout their educational journey.

Every day in the classroom, our teachers design multimodal assessments and collaborative projects in which every student has the opportunity to assume distinct roles (speaker, researcher, designer), each essential to the outcome. This allows learners with diverse strengths to contribute meaningfully while stepping into new challenges and gradually discovering capabilities they may not have recognized before. Across the school year, students continue to push their limits in academic competitions spanning a wide range of disciplines, inviting them to explore new areas, challenge their knowledge, and discover the full breadth of human knowledge.

And throughout their journey at PennSchool, students take on sustained projects and, as they mature, community service initiatives. Through these experiences, they not only deepen their understanding of the community around them but also develop a stronger sense of their role within it.”

Taking on different roles is particularly important because every #HomeOfTheEagles has different strengths. A student who usually prefers to work behind the scenes may discover an ability to develop ideas and lead a team. A student who often comes up with ideas but rarely presents in front of a crowd may challenge themselves to take on the role of a presenter. Others may start with a familiar role and then proactively try something completely new in their next projects.

Not every experience creates an immediate turning point. However, through repeated opportunities to participate, challenge themselves, and make adjustments, students have more chances to understand themselves better.

When the road ahead is not yet clear

Faced with questions like, “What career do you want to pursue? What is your dream?”, not every student knows from an early age that they want to become a doctor, engineer, or designer. Some are still searching for and changing their answers. This does not necessarily mean they lack direction. In reality, we often understand our path more clearly after we have walked it, rather than before we begin.

That is also why Mr. Tim refers to the lines from Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken when asked what message he would share with students who are unsure of their next step.

“Many of us know Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” as a poem that celebrates bold choices. But read it closely, and you’ll find something more honest: the two roads are worn ‘really about the same.’ Both are unknown. Both are uncertain. Even those who seem to know exactly where they’re going will meet challenges they never planned for. Life, it turns out, is less about knowing which road to take and more about how you respond when the road unexpectedly turns in a different direction. So to any student still unsure of their next step: you are not behind, and you are not alone; you are simply standing where every traveler stands. Persistence, resilience, patience, and perseverance will carry you through.”

For #HomeOfTheEagles, that journey can begin with something as simple as trying out a club, joining the Broadcasting Team, sharing knowledge on the TEDxYouth@PennSchool stage, or creating a dish at the PennChefs Contest. Not every choice will become a passion, but every experience helps students learn more about what they enjoy and what they are capable of.

At PennSchool, empowerment is not about giving students a ready-made answer, but about giving them the opportunity to find their own. Along the way, they do not need to know exactly where they are going from the very beginning. They simply need the opportunity to take the first step, the confidence to adapt, and the perseverance to keep moving forward.
